9 manga
Clark: 1834. A poncho or cloak used to protect the upper body against rain and cold weather. Referenced in the DRAE as a piece of cloth that covers the body from the shoulders almost to the feet. It may also refer to a rubber cape used to protect one from the rain while riding horseback. Santamaría concurs with the latter definition, and notes that it generally is fastened at the front and is known more commonly as a manga de hule in Mexico. A cowpoke needed some protection against the sudden cloudbursts or soggy days when the rain, wind, and mud created difficult working conditions. A manga, poncho, or waterproof jacket served that purpose. -
